Andrea Walens, PhD

Assistant Director of Collaborative Science at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center

About

My overall goal is to directly impact and improve cancer patient lives through research administration and advocacy. I'm currently the Assistant Director of Collaborative Science at the UNC-Chapel Hill Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. My current position builds off of my expertise in cancer biology and population science to help inform and support multi-team projects and secure funding for those projects. My recent experience includes being a Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Control Education at the UNC-CH Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. My research focused on the tumor immune microenvironment and how it may modify breast cancer mortality disparities.

I received my PhD in cancer biology at Duke University. I worked in the Alvarez Lab, studying the role of the tumor microenvironment in breast cancer dormancy and recurrence. I previously was involved in research at various institutions including; University of Georgia, Georgia Regents University, Lankenau Institute for Medical Research, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. At Duke, I was awarded the Chancellor's Scholarship and also received a pre-doctoral F31 fellowship for my thesis research. My career interests include supporting cancer research scientifically and administratively and pushing forward cancer research advocacy initiatives within and outside of my position.

When I'm not in lab, I volunteer with the American Cancer Society, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue, and I am an Outreach Leader for the Triangle for FORCE. I also enjoy time with my dog Sadie, taking care of my plants, and baking for my coworkers, friends and family.
